SKIN PRECAUTIONS
1. General Information
Skin precautions will be used when there is known or suspected risk of transmission of scabies mite by direct or indirect contact.
2. Definitions
Skin Precautions: is an extension of contact precautions created in the Northern Territory in response to the relatively high number of crusted scabies presentations.
3. Responsibilities
3.1
All Staff
Observe Standard and appropriate Additional precautions
3.2 Health Centre Manager
Ensure Standard and appropriate Additional precautions are undertaken
Ensure Personal Protection Equipment is available to staff
3.3 Professional Practice Nurse
Review and maintain Infection Control information
4. Procedure
As per Contact Precautions scabies can be transmitted from skin to skin or from contaminated client environment or equipment to susceptible people. Due to the copious amounts of skin shedding and large number of mites present on the client and their surrounding environment extra precautions are required.
This category of precautions is exclusive to:
- Crusted (formally called Norwegian Scabies) scabies.

Skin Transmission
Gloves
For all contact with client, associated devices and immediate environmental surfaces. Cuff of glove must fully cover the gown to prevent mite’s access to skin around the wrist area.
Impermeable apron/gowns
Long sleave gowns are required to protect forearms and are to be worn prior to entering homes. Scrub pants and shoe covers are also required for high levels of infestation.
Mask
Protect face if splash likely.
Goggles / face shields
Protect face if splash likely.
Transport of clients
Notify area receiving client. Cover client with long sleeve gown, gloves, theatre cap, booties and pants depending on extent of infestation.

Requirements
Skin Transmission
Client Equipment
Reusable equipment should be cleaned with detergent and water prior to reuse on other patients. Normal disinfection and sterilisation procedures apply.
Linen
Minimise contact and shaking of client linen. Soiled / wet or infested linen should be processed as soon as it is practicable.
Chlorine or oxygen bleaches, eg Napisan or equivalent, should be used in the first instance following the manufacturer’s instructions and followed by normal machine laundering.
Care should be taken in handling contaminated linen - gloves and protective clothing (plastic aprons) are required.
Waste
Handle as per Standard Precautions.
Other
Remove gloves, gowns and any other protective clothing following contact with client. Wash hands upon leaving client.
If large amount of skin shedding is present booties or rubber boots must be worn.
